BREAKING PROMISES
Well, for the second time I will be breaking my soltary and not very effective boycott of ABC since they pulled Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect from the airwaves for his having the audacity to not censor his passion in stating that the men who flew airplanes into buildings on 9.11 were anything but cowards. Not only was he right for speaking his mind, but he was right about what he said. Flying planes into buildings is not the act of a coward. And I agree with his backup point (a sleight against Clinton, I might add) that "lobbing cruise missiles from 1000 miles away ... now that's cowardly!"
The media pundits and idiots on the right construed his statements to mean that the troops destined at that point to be sent to Iran ... I mean Afghanistan were cowards.
A big FUCK YOU goes out to the media on that one for not showing Bill's entire statement in context, and an ever bigger FUCK YOU goes to ABC for not standing behind Bill for expressing himself, the demise of Bill's show was one of the first casualties of the free press in the wake of nationalist sentiment post 9.11.
Bill Maher is a patriot, period. You may not like what he says, but that doesn't give you the right to silence him. Bill is my hero, and I hope he has a long and happy life on his HBO show.
Now ... the first time I broke this boycott was for purely selfish reasons, it was to watch the Stephen King series Kingdom Hospital which turned out to be anything other than entertaining.
And tonight will be my second time as I settle in to watch Saving Private Ryan which will air uncensored on the network tonight.
ABC affiliates all over the country are making the decision not to show this film because of *gasp* political correctness. They are concerned about the graphic images of violence, and the foul language. SPR is an intelligent, thoughtful film that is a sublime examination of WWII and doesn't flinch from the cruelties of war.
But I guess if we're not looking at war within a totally positive light than it's not worth thinking about, is it?
So, fuck you to ABC for not standing up for Bill Maher, but a ^5 for their decision to air this film regardless of bullshit politically correct sentiment across the country.
