In posting the Declaration of Independence, I read through it again, and, no, the irony of "all men being created equal" and the Native Americans here before us being referred to as "indian savages" is not lost on me. As with most things, the good idea must be separated from the contemporary view. As much as may be psychologically or politically arcane, there are timeless truths and wisdoms in the ideas this document presents.
I am an opponent to what the white, European man did when he got here, but I am a proponent of where we've gotten to since.
Democracy is a good idea. The Declaration of Independence is more than the sum of its title, it's a sensible approach to civilization. Its most important attribute is what the declaration says to the people, to all of you and me, which is, in a few words, that it is OUR responsibility not to let the government get too upitty. However, the 2nd amendment, though trying to empower the people with arms against a despotic governmental rule, is now redundant. When everybody was armed with flint-lock rifles and the imagination couldn't get too much bigger than dynamite, then it made sense to arm the populace. Now, however, the government will roll over you and your stupid, ill-conceived militia groups with their tanks and their bunker busters, and you will pee on yourselves and cry. There is still a way to manipulate the government, but brute force is no longer a viable otion. That angle -- along with all religious thought, separatist notions, and secluded nations -- is a thing of the past. get over it, and start thinking with your brains, not your goddamned trigger fingers. The way to make an impression with today's politicians is not to threaten them with violence, but to threaten them with a lack of support. Our forefathers did not care about public opinion back in the day because they were the public, not some elitist group of religious fanatics and tree-huggers that spend their entire political careers trying to balance themselves on the median of paths described to them by public opinion polls. The responsibility of the people is to pay strict attention and not to let the government get away with the things that they are getting away with.
I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday, and I said to him, "All I see so far with this alleged 'war on terror' is a bunch of 'oil guys' trying to save their fucking jobs."
Well, people, this is exactly the kind of bullshit that the Declaration of Independence speaks to.
But you're just going to sit there while they rape you, charge you $10 for a pack of cigarettes (I guarantee if these kinds of taxes were being levied against liquor, there'd be a mob of angry drunks passed out on the White House lawn -- smokers . . . we can't make the walk up capitol Hill so we just let the dealer jack up the price knowing that because we're addicted, and we need the demon, that they'll be able to get away with whatever they want to charge us), they're going to fuck you and you're going to take it because you're forgetting how to think for yourselves. The voices of true patriots are being silenced, and President Gump still has a 70% approval rating. Enron is SUCH a bigger deal than Slick Willy's hummer, but this one you're willing to forgive? Jesus, Bill never even fucked Monica, but Dubya and his cronies have fucked the entire nation, and you're all going to sit there and take it, aren't you, you fuckers? You screwheads? Well, I'm getting sick of watching it.
I hope you get what you deserve.
